Mission House Lecture

“In My Heart, a Volcano: An Immigrant’s Story”

Come listen to the story of Rev. Rhina Ramos, an ordained United Church of Christ minister and founder of Ministerio Latino, a Spanish-speaking congregation for the LGBTQIA+ Latinx community. Rev. Ramos also serves as Associate Conference Minister for Anti-Racism in the Northern California & Nevada UCC Conference.

Born in El Salvador, Rev. Ramos came to New York as a teenager, holding onto her faith during a dangerous journey north and then during the challenges of building new community. She went on to earn a law degree, fighting for immigrant workers’ rights, before pursuing her call to ministry at the Pacific School of Religion.

Since 2011, she has led Ministerio Latino with compassion, courage, and what she calls “holy mischief,” creating a spiritual home where queer, trans, and immigrant people are fully themselves and fully loved. With her wife Shinobu, she continues to build the community she once longed for. Her celebrated book, En mi Corazón un Volcán, will be published in English this fall.
