Intimate partner violence is topic of first LU Faculty Lecture
Creating safer communities by addressing intimate partner violence will be the topic of the inaugural 51ĀŅĀ× Faculty Lecture.
Lakelandās Assistant Professor of Communication Aimee Burns-Boisvert, Ph.D., will provide an interactive talk entitled āCreating Safer Communities: Conversations on Intimate Partner Violenceā on Tuesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Jakeās, A Lakeland Community, 529 Ontario Ave, Sheboygan, Wis.
The evening, which is free and open to all, will help attendees identify intimate partner violence and ways to support survivors.
It is co-sponsored by 51ĀŅĀ×, Safe Harbor and United Way of Sheboygan County.
Within the United States, over one in three women and one in four men have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime, which can include psychological aggression, sexual abuse, physical violence and/or stalking from an intimate partner.
Burns-Boisvert will outline various types of IPV, providing a focus on more covert strategies, such as gaslighting and coercion, and the effects of IPV.
Audience members will be invited to consider their role in IPV prevention and recovery by dispelling myths, considering community resources and recognizing pathways to supporting survivors.
In addition to the talk, Elevate, Great Marriages, Safe Harbor and United Way of Sheboygan County will attend that night to share resources on IPV.
Burns-Boisvert, who teaches a wide range of communication courses at Lakeland, has also shared her gifts and knowledge in interpersonal communication as a domestic and sexual violence advocate. She frequently speaks and teaches in the community on issues related to sexual violence.
She completed a Ph.D. in media and communication from Bowling Green State University. Her emphasis area was interpersonal communication, and her work included a graduate certificate in women, gender and sexuality studies. Her dissertation was titled āIdentity and Romantic Relational Meaning-Making After Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence.ā
This is the first talk in a new Lakeland series which will allow a Lakeland faculty member to highlight and celebrate an area of expertise in a forum that benefits the campus and wider community.
The series is an opportunity for Lakeland faculty to enrich understandings of the human condition, contemporary issues, the arts, the physical and social worlds in which we live.
